SteamBans Detox Violation
mat_dxlevel, i have value 60, it demands at least 70, i didn't change this value on my client, it was default
OS: Linux (Ubuntu 7.10 - the Gutsy Gibbon - released in October 2007)
Installed closed source nvidia drivers with gui, no config editing
I run Steam under Wine, no config editing
I run Counter Strike Source, no config editing, i change my name, mouse sensitivity, if i try to change any video setting through the gui the game crashes, which means i'm stuck with recommended settings, i could try editing a config file, but i'm lazy.
Hardware: GeForce4 MX 440 AGP 8X
L this says it has directx 7 support, my combo says other wise http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_NVIDIA_Graphics_Processing_Un...
It seems like you guys are knowingly setting/enforcing new minimum system requirements without making much of an effort of informing those who install your software. The result is that % of server owners are unknowingly banishing a pool of players that they do not want to banish.
To be fair this kind of stuff isn't new to the world of Valve, Team Fortress 2 has a directx hardware req of 8, leaving me with a virtual paper weight.

So what do you expect us to support DX version older then DX8? I dont even think people should play games of these days and age if they cant at least have DX8 installed. We are in 2008 now and things are slowly moving on, we cannot always stand still with things from 1999 ;)
For one I wouldnt want people with older pc's / videocards to join our server as it creates lag and other performance issues for the other players.
I expected to get a better idea of where you guys stand on these kinds of issues, i did.
I classified this as a bug because the software didn't work as i expected it to after reading the info on your website.
Also, a minor issue, just something to think about: did i get kicked with the words "detox violation" being shown to everyone? i think i'm seeing a pattern of a lot of people classifying a person with an anti-cheat violation as being a definite cheater. Hlstatsx has a "VAC banlist", i suspect that it contains people who got kicked by VAC for any reason. There are some non cheats that VAC kicks for but doesn't ban.
Any chance of seeing these kinds of problem solving features in the future?
* Profile that doesn't dislike my dxlevel
* SteamID white list
* cvar white list
* combo of the 2 above
If you don't like the idea of these kinds of features being abused by server root admins, here are some ideas:
* change/remove the detox in game advertisement if someone/something has immunity
* make a public cvar that indicates if someone/something has immunity
dxlevels below 7 do give unfare advantages to players and probably why detox does not allow them, many times simple things like fog/smoke and other things simply are not rendered,if a player is kicked by detox for dx level that player is informed from what i understand, its in there best interest to simply upgrade to prevent further kicks from the many servers that run it. as for valves VAC kicking, ive yet to see that in the years ive been gaming.
