History
Steambans.com is brand new service based on an old concept. Global banlists have been active for years on the old WONID program from valve. When the change came to STEAMID it fell natural for us to develop a service specially minded to this new system. But we also wanted more.
The sometimes brainless acceptance of people's accusations and blind trust in anti-cheat detection tools seemed way too common in the "business". We wanted to create a service for admins that were interested in getting better at spotting and catching cheaters themselves. Fighting cheat developers and cheaters on their own terms (programming) were for us to hard a battle to go up head to head against (there are perfectly good tools available for that). We wanted to focus on the cheater personally more then on the cheats he used. Our experience tells us that a cheater will eventually make mistakes and reveal his cheats, and we want admins ready to catch him when he does. This way we can base our catches on humans (server admins) and gain experience via them to develop better and more precise techniques for spotting cheats.
SBQC = SteamBans Quality Control
When basing your system on humans and have evidence taken and brought in by humans, you evidently have a large margin of possible error. This is why the quality term is so important for us, and we have held ourselves up towards a very high standard in every aspect of our system. However by holding up a high rate of quality it will after some time soak down to our server admins, and improve the way that they work on the servers, making our job easier and creating better and more quality bans with lesser margins of error. This is why we call ourselves proactive which we see as the main difference between us and other banlists. We seek to improve not only our own system and methods, but also our customers. In every link of our chain people can assume to - at some point in time - bump into our SBQC (SteamBans Quality Control).
Education
We learn as long as we live. This phrase is also true when it comes to anti-cheat development and spotting. We do not claim to be perfect in our way of determine cheats by analysing demos, but we do claim to have a very sophisticated system to ensure the previous mentioned quality of our bans. Furthermore we seek to educate the admins submitting suspected cheats to us on how to improve their spotting technique and plan to launch "spotting courses" where larger communities can sign up trusted admins to become "SB certified admins" which will indicate a high quality and knowledge about spotting techniques, which then can be used to make all admins in the community better and more professional. But when it comes to catching cheats, it's very much about "learning by doing", and "trial and error". We do not claim to be able to mass produce spotting experts, but we do claim to be able to better open ways of thinking and spotting that will help and guide admins along the "right" path in order to gain the necessary experience.
